1961 Cabriolet DB Panhard Le Mans

At first glance, the 1961 D.B. Le Mans appears to be a charming French interpretation of the early 1960s sports car. Its long hood, delicate chrome trim and restrained tailfins give it a touch of American glamour. Beneath that fashionable fiberglass body, however, is a machine shaped by a very different philosophy.

The D.B. Le Mans was not designed around a large engine or brute force. It was built around efficiency. By combining low weight, aerodynamic bodywork and an unusually compact Panhard engine, Deutsch-Bonnet created a sports car that could achieve impressive performance without excess.
Two Engineers, One Name
The initials D.B. stood for Charles Deutsch and René Bonnet, two French automobile builders whose partnership began before World War II. Deutsch was a trained engineer with a particular talent for aerodynamics while Bonnet brought practical mechanical knowledge, business instinct and a passion for competition.

Together they developed a succession of lightweight racing and sports cars. Their earliest machines used Citroën components, but the company later formed a close relationship with Panhard. Panhard’s compact air-cooled engines and front-wheel-drive mechanicals were perfectly suited to D.B.’s belief that a small car could compete with much larger machines through intelligent engineering.

Throughout the 1950s, D.B. became a familiar name in endurance racing. Its cars were rarely the most powerful on the starting grid but their low weight, reliability and aerodynamic efficiency made them formidable competitors at events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Mille Miglia.
Racing Ideas for the Road
Introduced in 1959, the D.B. Le Mans brought the company’s competition philosophy into a more comfortable road car. The model was developed partly with American buyers in mind and made its world debut at the 1959 Boston Motor Show before appearing at the Paris Motor Show later that year.

The body was designed by Jacques Hubert in collaboration with René Bonnet and Bonnet’s son Claude. Instead of resembling one of D.B.’s tiny competition coupés, the Le Mans was given a longer, more elegant profile with a low nose, sweeping rear fenders and modest tailfins. Approximately 232 Panhard-powered D.B. Le Mans cars were produced between 1959 and the spring of 1962, making surviving examples exceptionally rare.

Its tailfins are especially unusual. European designers occasionally borrowed American styling ideas during this period, but few European sports cars carried fins so openly. On the D.B., they are slim and carefully integrated into the rear bodywork, giving the little French car a flash of transatlantic swagger without overwhelming its proportions.
Performance Through Lightness
Under the hood is one of the car’s most fascinating features: an 848 cc Panhard Tigre engine.

This air-cooled, horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine is much smaller than what most people would expect to find in a sports car. Period specifications generally list output at approximately 51 horsepower using the European DIN measurement or 58 horsepower under the more generous American SAE system. Power is sent through a four-speed manual transmission to the front wheels.

Those figures may appear modest until the car’s weight is considered. The D.B. Le Mans weighs less than 1,500 pounds, allowing its small engine to work far more effectively than it would in a conventional automobile. Rather than adding displacement, cylinders and mass, D.B. removed everything the car did not need.

The result was a sports car capable of lively performance, responsive handling and respectable speed while using an engine only slightly larger than those found in some economy cars. It was the automotive equivalent of a fencer facing a heavyweight boxer: victory would come through balance and precision rather than raw muscle.

Front-wheel drive also distinguished the Le Mans from most contemporary sports cars. Its engine and transaxle were concentrated at the front while the lightweight fiberglass body helped keep the car agile. The arrangement drew heavily upon Panhard engineering, but D.B. transformed those humble mechanical components into something far more exotic.
Fiberglass Before It Was Ordinary
Unlike several earlier D.B. models, the Le Mans did not use the company’s traditional backbone chassis. Its fiberglass body was mounted over a heavily modified Panhard PL 17 platform reinforced by tubular structures at each end.

Fiberglass was still an adventurous material for automobile construction in the late 1950s. It allowed small manufacturers to create complex shapes without investing in the enormous presses and tooling required for steel bodies.
For D.B., fiberglass offered another advantage: lightness.

The material allowed the designers to form the Le Mans’ long nose, curved fenders and subtle fins while keeping the car’s total weight remarkably low. The fiberglass body was supported by a steel structure, combining the sculptural freedom of a molded shell with the strength needed for the suspension and drivetrain.
Why Call It “Le Mans”?
The name was no decorative badge. D.B. had spent years proving that a small engine could challenge much larger cars in endurance racing.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans included an award known as the Index of Performance. Instead of rewarding outright speed alone, the index compared each car’s actual distance against a target determined partly by engine displacement. It gave small, efficient cars an opportunity to defeat more powerful machines by exceeding expectations.

At the 1961 24 Hours of Le Mans, Gérard Laureau and Robert Bouharde drove the number 53 D.B.-Panhard HBR4 to 18th overall and first in the Index of Performance. The winning race car was a specialized 702 cc barquette rather than a production Le Mans cabriolet, but it represented the same engineering creed: less weight, less displacement and more efficiency.

That distinction is important. The road-going Le Mans was not simply the factory race car with license plates. Instead, it translated the lessons learned through competition into a stylish automobile that could be used beyond the racetrack.
The End of Deutsch-Bonnet
The year 1961 also marked the final chapter of the partnership between Charles Deutsch and René Bonnet.

The two men increasingly disagreed about the company’s future. Deutsch remained committed to Panhard engines, front-wheel drive and aerodynamic efficiency. Bonnet believed the next generation of sports cars should use Renault engines and mid-engine layouts.

Their partnership dissolved, with Deutsch continuing to develop Panhard-powered cars under the initials C.D. René Bonnet established a new company and developed Renault-powered automobiles, including the mid-engine Djet. Bonnet’s company was later absorbed by Matra, making the D.B. story an important link between prewar French specials, postwar endurance racers and the celebrated Matra sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s.

The 1961 D.B. Le Mans challenges the idea that a sports car requires a large engine. Its performance came from careful aerodynamics, fiberglass construction, front-wheel drive and a tiny air-cooled flat-twin. Even its distinctive tailfins served as a reminder that efficient engineering did not have to look severe or purely functional.
Only a small number were built, and the partnership that created them was already approaching its end. That makes the Le Mans more than an unusual French sports car. It is a surviving chapter from the bittersweet summit of Deutsch-Bonnet, when two engineers proved that intelligence could sometimes be measured in pounds removed rather than horsepower added.
