The 1899 Société Parisienne Victoria Combination

At 10 Avenue de la Grande-Armée in Paris, only a short distance from the Arc de Triomphe, a bicycle manufacturer faced a question that was beginning to occupy engineers across Europe: What should an automobile look like?

In 1899, there was no obvious answer. Some inventors built motorized tricycles. Others placed engines beneath conventional carriages. Steam, electricity and gasoline were competing for the road, while horses still carried most people through the city.



Société Parisienne chose a solution that was both practical and wonderfully literal. The company kept the carriage and replaced the horse. A traditional Victoria passenger body was connected to a compact front assembly containing a gasoline engine, transmission, steering mechanism and two driven wheels. When the driver moved a long tiller, the entire powered front section pivoted and pulled the carriage around the turn.

The result was the Victoria Combination, one of the earliest front-wheel-drive automobiles manufactured in meaningful numbers. It was part bicycle, part carriage and part motorcar, built at a moment when all three worlds briefly shared the same road.


A Bicycle Company Enters the Motor Age


This restored and colorized photograph, published in The Cycle and Motor World on January 6, 1897, shows a remarkable clock built entirely from bicycle components by the Société Parisienne. Exhibited at the Salon du Cycle in Paris, it used cycle wheels, chains and cranks without altering their original shapes. Driven by a 400-pound weight and a network of twelve intermediary wheels, the elaborate mechanism kept time and struck the hours, half-hours and quarter-hours.

Société Parisienne had been building bicycles and bicycle components since 1875. The company promoted itself as France’s oldest bicycle manufacturer.


Bicycle companies already understood many of the technologies required to build a light automobile: tubular frames, wire-spoke wheels, pneumatic tires, bearings and precisely manufactured mechanical components.


Société Parisienne was proud of its mechanical skill. At one exhibition, the company displayed a functioning clock assembled largely from bicycle parts. Gears, wheels and chains became a moving advertisement for the workmanship taking place at its Paris factory.


By the end of the 1890s, however, bicycles were no longer the only machines transforming personal transportation. Small gasoline engines were becoming lighter and more dependable. Carriage builders were experimenting with motor power and Paris had become one of the centers of the rapidly growing automobile industry.


Why Not Simply Replace the Horse?


The Victoria was already a popular type of horse-drawn carriage. It had a low passenger body, comfortable seating and a form that established coachbuilders knew how to construct. Customers understood how to enter it, where to sit and how it would behave on the road.

The name “Victoria Combination” described the idea perfectly. It combined traditional coachbuilding with bicycle construction and a new gasoline engine.

The design also addressed one of the hidden costs of horse-drawn transportation. A horse required food, shelter and daily care whether it was working or standing idle. A motor required fuel and maintenance, but it did not need to be fed every morning.


The People and Companies Behind the Car




The Victoria Combination brought together several established French specialists.

Société Parisienne organized and marketed the automobile. Alfred Belvallette, whose Paris firm was respected for its horse-drawn carriages, produced the Victoria-style coachwork. Alexandre Darracq’s Perfecta works has been associated with the specialized powered front assembly. The engine came from De Dion-Bouton, one of the most important suppliers of small gasoline engines during the automobile’s earliest years. Longuemare supplied the carburetor. Period descriptions also identify specialist manufacturers connected with the transmission, tires and wheel rims.


A Mechanical Horse at the Front

The most remarkable part of the Victoria Combination sat ahead of the passengers. A single-cylinder De Dion-Bouton engine was mounted on the front assembly along with the clutch, transmission and differential. Power was sent to the two front wheels rather than to the rear axle.

The complete unit also formed part of the steering system. When the driver moved the long tiller, the front axle, engine and transmission pivoted together. Instead of the engine remaining fixed while the wheels turned independently, the entire mechanical package swung in the direction of travel.

It performed the same basic task as the horse that it replaced: pulling from the front and changing direction ahead of the carriage. The rear wheels supported the passenger body and carried the brakes. This produced a machine whose front and rear sections had very different jobs. The front supplied power and steering. The rear carried the passengers and helped stop the vehicle.


Early examples used De Dion-Bouton engines producing roughly 1¾ to 2¼ horsepower with a two-speed transmission. One period English advertisement claimed a weight of approximately 240 pounds, a speed above 20 mph and a price of £120 delivered in London.


The design continued to change as automobile technology advanced. By 1901, company advertising described a 3½-horsepower version with three speeds and water circulation for cooling.


Learning to Drive a Machine That Had No Rulebook


Driving the Victoria Combination required more than steering and selecting a gear.

The driver sat behind a long tiller known in French as a queue de vache, or “cow’s tail.” Moving it guided the entire front power unit. Because the engine and driven axle pivoted together, steering required anticipation and a gentle hand.

The driver also had to listen constantly to the single-cylinder engine.

Engine speed was controlled partly by advancing or retarding the ignition. The carburetor’s air supply and butterfly valve required additional adjustment. Too much fuel could overwhelm the engine. Too little could make it lose power, cough or pop.

The gear change occupied one hand while the other managed the tiller and additional controls. The driver still needed to sound the horn, signal to other road users and watch for horses that might be frightened by the unfamiliar machine.

A later driving account describes low gear as useful up t

o approximately 6 mph, while a properly operated car could exceed 20 mph in high gear.


Proving It Beyond the City

For an early automobile company, a long journey was more than a road trip. It was a public test of credibility. On August 18, 1899, a Victoria Combination reportedly traveled from Paris to Rambouillet and back. The route covered approximately 100 kilometers and was completed with two people aboard in 3 hours and 50 minutes.



In March 1900, another car traveled from Saint-Germain to Rouen and returned, covering approximately 218 kilometers in just over eight hours. Period accounts emphasized that the machine negotiated the hills along the route without outside assistance.



These journeys placed the Victoria Combination in the real world, on uneven roads, climbing grades and traveling far beyond the safety of its Paris factory.

They also gave Société Parisienne valuable advertising material. By 1901, the company claimed that more than 500 Victoria Combinations were already in circulation.
